Gone are the days when we used to hear songs like ‘Ab hun aaye baalma saawan bita jaaye...’, ‘Laaga chunari mein daag lagaoon kaise...’ etc based on one or the other classical raga. Today, music lovers have been feeling the absence of classical songs in films for quite a long time. As if that’s not enough, talent hunt programmes on several TV channels are not really encouraging classical singing or are bereft of participants who excel in that. To encourage singing in the style and in order to keep classical music alive, Doordarshan’s Sahyadri Channel has launched Music Cafe, an innovative series that promises to be a treat for music lovers.
The show launched primarily to attract young viewers besides lovers of classical music, aims to provide information on various aspects of classical music viz. the who’s who in the field, cultural evenings across the metropolis, glimpses of archival material. The show also boasts the presence of classical music experts like Pandit Jasraj, Hariprasad Chaurasiya, Pandit Govindrao Paluskar, Dr Prabha Atre, Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar, Dr N Rajan, Pandit Brijbhushan Devki Pandit, Taufik Quereshi, Pandit Ratanmohan Sharma, music director Shravan (of Nadeem Shravan fame) and Rudanand Naypalli in each episode. Young singers who show a flair for songs based on ragas would also be given an impetus. In short Music Cafe projects itself to be a website for music lovers.
The Sahyadri channel recently organised a press conference to give a brief about the programme. Present on the dais were Mukesh Sharma, Director, Doordarshan , Mumbai who has conceptualized the show, Pandit Jasraj, the guest in the first episode, Dr Bindu Trivedi, a post-graduate in Music, Arvind Parikh, convenor, India Music Forum , Sameera Gujar and Omkar Kulkarni-the comperes of the show. Other technicians associated with the show were also present on the occasion.
Sharma, citing the absence and wearing away of classical music, said, “The Sahaydri channel thought it fit to introduce such a show and we were proved right when our first twenty six episodes were sold to sponsors without any hassle.” Hinting at the waning interest in classical music, Pandit Jasraj termed the show as an encouraging one and praised the channel for coming out with it. “This show comes at the right time and my blessings are with them for formulating this unique concept.” Refering to talent hunt shows being meted out by some TV channels, Panditji said in a light vein, “I used to be refered to as a creative artiste, Bismillah Khan was better known as a radio artiste but the winners in this show will be named ‘TV artiste’ in classical music.” Underlining the need to have more and more cultural activists, Arvind Parlkh said that the show looked to be very well sectionalized and hoped that the show would bring in an awakening among the youth to pursue the art of classical singing.
