It's the seventh annual Detroit Summer Smash and it's crashing into the Lager House in Detroit tonight and Saturday.
The mostly underground gathering of independent music began in 1999 at the Magic Stick in Detroit and showcased artists like the Sights and Outrageous Cherry, who were unknowns at the time.
This year's event boasts 20 local and touring bands showcased over three nights.
While the event was scheduled to kick off Thursday night with performances by Detroiters the Deadstring Brothers, Javelins, Kelly Jean Caldwell and others, there's still time to catch a lot of music.
A mix of touring and local acts of the rock 'n' roll kind will play tonight including the Trembling (Detroit), Picastro (Toronto), Race Track (Bellingham), Johnny Headband (Detroit), Pants Yell (Boston), Those Transatlantics (Mt. Pleasant) and Braille (Chicago).
On Saturday, look for New Grenada (Detroit), the Avatars (Ann Arbor), Tiny Steps (Detroit), the Pop Project (Ann Arbor), Red Pony Clock (San Diego) and Kiddo (Cleveland).
A compilation CD featuring performers from the event will be available. Proceeds from the CD, along with the $7 admission, will benefit the Gift of Life and C.O.T.S. Shows begin at 9 p.m. 1254 Michigan, Detroit. 313-961-4668. For more, visit the Web at www.summersmash.org.
Three of Detroit's most talked-about bands have been selected to perform in a nationwide battle of the bands sponsored by the folks at Can You Hear Me TV, an Internet-based music outlet that focuses on the underground scene.
The tour will hit nine cities, including an Aug. 24 stop at the Magic Stick in Detroit where the Muggs, the Hard Lessons and the Hotness will perform live. The event is free for those 18 and older.
